it's been over two weeks since 17-year-old amber stanley was killed in her home in prince george's county. at a community meeting tonight police gave an update on the murder that has rocked the normally quiet neighborhood. fox 5's karen gray houston has the developments. >> this brazen killing defies explanation. why would anyone barge into a private home and shoot and kill a 17-year-old girl? police told concerned residents tonight in kettering they are taking this case very seriously, but they also need help from the community to solve the crime. residents packed into the kettering community center. there was standing room only. the people want answers. >> this is the first time we had something like this happen so close to us and i would appreciate it if they're able to find out who did this. >> reporter: hosting the meeting prince george's county police said an entire squad is dedicated to the case. the fbi has assigned a crime analyst. investigators are getting tips daily. don't have a composite sketch of a suspect, but say they are

still looking for a motive. >> as of this date right now we do not have an exact suspect description that we can share with you. >> we've spoken to students at amber's high school charles flowers and spoken to students at largo high school. we put this information out on our crime solvers tip line. >> reporter: 2 1/2 weeks ago an aarped man kicked in the door at amber stanley's home on chartsey street, went straight to her bedroom, kicked in that door and shot her several times. police tell fox 5 the foster daughter amber's mother was raising along with her own two children is in protective custody at an undisclosed location. officers had answered a service call a few days before the shooting at the home because of an incident involving that teen. meanwhile amber's mother attended the meeting where residents showed support. >> we need help. we need a community to pull together and get this person or

persons, whoever did this horrendous murder that killed my baby, my baby girl. >> erma stanley said she's at a loss to explain the killing and she just wants to wake up from this horrible dream. anyone who saw or heard anything unusual the night of august 22nd is asked to call the police tip line. there's a $25,000 reward for information leading to arena. >> karen gray houston tonight. a virginia woman says a man somehow got into her apartment and attacked her friday night in the 8,000 block of shanute place in mclean. the man tried to sexually assault her. she fought him until he gave up and took off. a guilty verdict today in the murder of a d.c. man killed riding his bike home from work. neil godleski was riding through sherman circle in august of 2010 we had was shot. eric foreman was convicted of felony murder today just shy of his 18th birthday at the time. he now faces a mandatory 3rd

years in prison. a toddler drowned in a community pool in olney today. a neighbor found the almost 3- year-old boy in the water on sandy knoll drive this morning, performed cpr. the boy was declared dead at the hospital. police are investigating and may file charges. the child was with a caretaker at the time. >> severe storms once again rocked our region this weekend taking down trees and power lines. in fact, at one point hundreds of thousands of homes were in the dark. tonight the clean-up continues. sue palka has more now from the fox 5 weather center. >> we felt what those storms did. it lowered our temperature from the 90s saturday to the 70s today, but it was a fast moving and really wicked line of storms that produced multiple reports of funnels and a lot of winds gusting to 60 miles an hour. folks in maryland and virginia were really hard hit. we'll show you a picture talk in hyattsville. these are residents on medwick drive. they spent most of the day

yesterday clearing debris, lots of downed trees and power lines and this clean-up will probably take a little longer. another hard hit area is reston. they had to do two storm surveys thinking tornadoes touched down, but they didn't. needless to say 60-mile an hour wind gusts toppled trees onto cars and in one case a tree crushed a garage. lots of roofs were smashed in as well. michael jackson works for trees are us and says this weekend's storms have kept him hopping. >> it's been rough, some long days, a lot of stuff on houses and stuff, getting it off, just time consuming, you don't want to rush too fast to go through things and slip up and >> jackson expects the clean-up will take another week or so. let me show you what is the beneficial side of these storms. of course, it was very hot and humid before they got there. check out these temperatures we expect to hit overnight. 49 in frederick.

are speed camera fines in the district just too high? tonight neighbors showed up in numbers at a community meeting in ward 7 explaining why they think those camera fines are just making money for the city. fox 5's matt ackland was there. >> police say the sole purpose of these cameras is to save lives by preventing accidents. most residents understand that, but what they don't understand is why the city is charging violators so much, from $75 up to $250 a ticket. tonight at one of the few sitdown restaurants in ward 7 where unemployment is high and many residents struggle to make ends meet some say even one camera fine is a financial hardship. >> i'm not even making that much money that i can afford a

$120 or 25 or 250. >> reporter: the issue of speed camera fines has been getting a lot of attention districtwide recently. a lot of people are upset. >> it doesn't make sense. it's about money. it's not about safety and i have a problem with that. >> reporter: council members tommy wells and mary cheh have started a discussion about possibly lowering fines. >> the tickets are just too high. >> reporter: council member wells agrees cameras are needed, but the expensive fines are not. >> it should not be such a hardship. the purpose of the fines is to improve the behavior. >> reporter: but there are some who disagree with him. >> we need one on alabama avenue. >> reporter: 70-year-old hillcrest resident gladys gray has no sympathy for speeders. >> give them a ticket. i beg for a camera. we're beg ing for more. >> reporter: many favor a flat fee getting rid of radar

cameras altogether, but the question is how much? >> anything reasonable would between 50 and $75. >> d.c. council is the one that sets the fines, so the council will have to introduce legislation to change the fines. d.c. police do defend the cameras saying they are working when it comes to slowing people down, but the cameras are also on pace to generate $50 million a year for the district. >> a lot of money, thank you. former d.c. council chairman kwame brown will not be sentenced next week after awe. his lawyered asked for a delay, so it moves to sentencing on november 12th. brown pled guilty in june to bank fraud and a campaign finance violation charge and faces up to six months in prison on each charge. meantime it's likely a former campaign aide to mayor vincent gray won't serve jail time. prosecutors say howard brooks has been cooperative and provided substantial assistance into mayor gray's 2020 election

campaign. brooks is accused of lying of paying off another mayoral candidate. brooks is scheduled to be sentenced in october. looks like the democratic national convention gave president obama a bit of a boost in the polls. cnn released a poll this morning showing president obama with 56% of the vote, mitt romney 46%. joined now by fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin to look deeper into all this. the new presidential poll nationwide you're not so concerned about, right? >> i don't think either candidate should be. i repeated something last night and i think it's worthy of repetition. mike dukakis was up 17 points. as far as i remember, mike dukakis didn't get elected president in 1988. he lost. so in these national polls talk to al gore. he won by over 500,000 votes in the year 2000 on the popular vote but did not win. i'm much more interested in the

statewide polls, in the battle ground state, those eight states which are -- states, those eight states which are very close and in that president obama probably should feel a lot better. seven of those eight polls in terms of real clear politicians that obama is ahead. the only state he's behind in is north carolina. >> which ones do you think that it's looking like mitt romney and the republicans are kind of giving up on? >> a big state which is pennsylvania. even though there's real voter id questions there, which is on the ballot that you have to produce a voter id. so i'm a little skeptical of that one where they think they now have a shot being wisconsin, which was before it was not considered a battleground state and obama won it by 14 points. now polls are showing romney might win there. >> i think we all saw it coming the pivot towards the mid.

mitt romney has done it in sort of -- middle. mitt romney has done it in sort of dramatic fashion in taking on healthcare. he vows to appeal obamacare and now he's thinking he's going to keep a lot of obamacare in his healthcare plan. >> you put it much better than i could, brian, and synthesized it very well. what was very dramatic is over the weekend in another major network he said he's not going to throw away all of obamacare. in fact, he's for not outlawing giving insurance to preexisting conditions and that goes directly to the individual mandate. you really can't have that provision where somebody can get insurance even with a preexisting condition without everybody paying into the pool which is the individual mandate. already republicans, some realms, are calling him flip- flopping -- republicans, are calling him flop flopping and he also wants to maintain people up to 26 you can be on

this is fox 5 news at 10:00. the 9/11 memorial is expected to be breathtaking once it's finished, but it comes with a jaw dropping price tag. the foundation that rubs the memorial estimates that -- runs the memorial estimates that once the $705 million is complete, it could take millions to operate. for many people impacted by the events of 9/11 few causes

are more important than helping the victims and the first responders, but as fox 5 investigates, some 9/11 charities are not living up to their promises and there are questions about where that money is going. sherri ly reports. >> you have some breaking news and we'll go to live picture from new york city. apparently a plane has crashed into the world trade center in new york. >> reporter: the tragedy of 9/11 led to an outpouring of sympathy, support and money, hundreds of charities created in the wake of the disaster raised more than $2 billion. >> what would be more catastrophic would be to drop a building on the people who were there to help. >> reporter: america's 9/11 ride was ted shertef's answer. the past 10 years he's led a 400-mile four-day motorcycle ride to all three crash sites. it starts in shanksville,

pennsylvania, goes to the pentagon and ends at new york's ground zero. >> it's a heart thing you do. you can't pay me to do it. >> reporter: he's not paid and neither is anyone else on the board. all the work that goes into it is voluntary and over the years the leesburg virginia charity raised $2.2 million. its mission, to provide scholarship to the children of first responders and to help cash strapped fire departments and police around the country, but putting on the ride is costly. >> some look at it is where does your fund goes? our major thing for funding is hotel rooms. >> reporter: in 10 years only $168,000 has gone to scholarships after paying for hotels, food, tolls, compensation to close roads and other expenses, another 540,000 went to buy motorcycles and help first responders. charity navigator which evaluates more than 6,000 charities says donors should be concerned. >> we think it's terrible. we think it's a real waste of

money when these kind of expensive events seem to cost so much money. >> reporter: while the event's website features a pie chart counting nearly 90% of its money goes to programs and services, its 2011 tax file shows differently with 44% of revenues spent on fundraising with far less return. >> they claim that scholarships are a central part of what they do, but out of $400,000 raised approximately 350 to $400,000 raised about 30,000 goes to scholarships. >> reporter: following the terrorist attack the irs fast tracked more than 300 9/11- related charities. as of 2006 charity navigator found 1/3 couldn't be found. 38 were out of business. >> after a few years the amount of giving declined significantly. >> i had this lofty expectation of maybe getting half a million or 700,000. >> reporter: tom heiden berger

learned how hard it is to raise money. five years after the attacks he biked 33 days across the country in remembrance to honor the 33 flight crew members that died including his wife. >> i had to want to see it through. i mean because i physically lost someone and i wanted to do this on my own. >> reporter: he raised $150,000, split between the memorial fund at each crash site. it angers him to see other charities that failed to live up to promises like the ones that pledged to send victims' children to college. >> they're getting between 2,000, 2,500, 10,000, small amounts. what's it cost to send a kid to college now a days? it doesn't meet the expectations. >> reporter: believes events like america's 9/11 ride still have a symbolic value, not measured in dollars. >> it's better than nothing and it's not just as i mentioned earlier about money. it's not just about a service.

it's about remembering someone or an event. >> i'm not a professional fundraiser. i'm just a local guy who was motivated to do something. >> reporter: last month hundreds of bikers made the journey on america's 9/11 ride. people will have to judge for themselves whether it's money well spent. sherri ly, fox 5 news. for the first time america's 9/11 foundation hired an executive director to help boost fundraising. charity navigator recommends checking out any charity before donating. check the organization's finances, management accountability and mission. members of the muslim community will mark tomorrow's anniversary with a blood drive. the amadea muslim community, one of the oldest muslim organizations in the country holding its second annual muslim for belief blood drive. the goal is to show muslims value human life. >> i think we have a terrorist

day tomorrow. we do have temperatures that will tank tonight. the air is really i do over d.c. so that's -- dry over d.c. so that's why we think temperatures in the 40s will be doable, but it looks like the weather will hang around. check out the weather headline. high pressure will dominate all week and not just at the surface, but also aloft. it's doing many good things in addition to it's going rid of heat and humidity. it's keeping tropical storm leslie and hurricane michael out to sea. it's going right pass cape race newfoundland. they'll get a close call with it. they've got a strong tropical storm with winds 70 miles an hour. high pressure is dominating much of the east coast. we think this will hang around all week. there will be warm days and cool nights certainly by the middle of the week. as the high slips closer to the coast, we'll find our temperatures climbing into the mid-80s. today it was way below average at 77 degrees, dulles 76, bwi

thurgood marshall 75. if we drop into the 40s tonight, that will be the coolest air in the suburbs since maybe mid- to late may. check out your temperature trend the next several days. our average high dropped to 82 degrees. we'll be below it tomorrow at 78 degrees. by wednesday about 82. we go a little above average thursday for a nice comfortable day, nice low humidity 85 degrees. friday about 84. all these days look like they'll be dry. in fact, our next chance for showers probably not coming until sometime sunday with a weak front, so not expecting storms, just a couple chances for showers sunday. meanwhile our temperature in the district still one of the warmer spots at 67 degrees, but a lot of other spots down to the 50s, 54 gaithersburg, 52 frederick, 61 baltimore, 60 for fredericksburg and you can see culpeper down to 54 degrees and out here we'll find a lot of spots dropping into the 40s. check out our projected low temperatures under clear skies,

very dry conditions, 57 for the district, a pair of 49s for gaithersburg and frederick, dulles 48 degrees and culpeper comes in at 49 degrees. a little warmer closer to the bay, annapolis may come in closer to 60 degrees. tonight clear skies mean chilly low temperatures, but 57 for the district, full sunshine tomorrow, a lot more of the same great weather we had today. sunny and crisp with a temperature of 78 degrees. it will be cool in the morning, 60 in the city, but 50s in the suburbs at 8 a.m. by noon 73 degrees, sunshine and 5:00 78 with mostly sunny skies continuing. here's where we're thinking the highs hit tomorrow, again another day in the 70s, maybe on the lower end of the 70s looking out to the western suburbs and 78 degrees in the district. satellite and radar again shows us all the clear skies that we have. you have to go all the way out to the rockies to find those showers and you can see a little bit of the tropical

storm rains going past halifax and november scioscia or at least getting closer at this point. our futurecast -- nova scotia or at least getting closer at this point. our futurecast shows it trying to make a run at us but it won't be till later in the week those showers are able to get in here. your seven-day forecast, 78 degrees tomorrow, full sunshine thursday, friday, saturday and temperatures gradually warming to the mid-80s closer to the end of the week, maybe a couple showers sunday and monday with temperatures in the low 80s, but that's a pretty great run of weather. we'll start seeing leaves begin to get a little color with those temperatures at night. all of a sudden summer is gone. fall has rolled into town. >> i'm looking forward to it. britney spears settling into her new role at the judge's seat on x-factor and the pop star's surprising tough love may be giving designated bad guy and fellow judge simon cowell a run for his money.

rapper nicki minaj caused quite a stir last week when she rapped about romney and president obama said he wasn't quite sure she meant the verse to be taken literally.
